you're right. Not having ever owned a gun, I am not that knowledgeable on the subject. The 69 people massacred in Norway were killed by a sociopath that had, along with other weapons, a semi automatic gun (Glock?)

I guess banning automatic weapons wouldn't mean much if a semi automatic weapon can do such damage.

I've read that there was an automatic weapon at the Connecticut killings but was not used. Semiautomatic weeapons did the damage.
