This chip is TCR #N2824. It's listed on page 27 of my (2012/14th edition/obsolete) The Chip Rack; it's listed with an issue date of 1973.
It's listed under Bonanza Casino; 4720 N. Virginia Street; opened: 1979; closed: no
The Chip Guide listing matches TCR.
Something didn't seem quite right...a 1973 chip for a casino that opened in 1979.
In the 1971-1972 phone book, that property is listed as the Bonanza Square Inn & Lounge. My next Reno resource, Dwayne Kling, says that the Bonanza Square Inn & Casino, at 4720 North Virginia, was licensed in 1973 for slots, keno, 21, craps, and roulette.
Kling says that in 1973 Don Baldwin and Lou Benetti Jr. were licensed....In January 1974 Robert Mc Donald and Robert Douglass each purchased one-third of the business and Baldwin and Benetti eventually left the business. In June 1975 Russ Sheltra was licensed as a 25% owner. In January 1980 Pat Brady purchased 2%.
You can see the full Kling history at www.nevadacasinoashtrays.org Click on Reno (near the top of the page), then click on Bonanza Square (menu on the left side of the page).
Anyway...through various owners, it's kept the Bonanza name. Just seems like the TCR & Chip Guide might want to show an opening date of 1973????
I don't have my Gaming Table in front of me, but I'm guessing that it probably has a couple of different listings for different owners...and that one of the listings has an opening date of 1979...and maybe that's where the 1979 date came from???
