Glass on the scanner is not the problem. It's the thing that moves under the glass when you do a scan. You do have a flat-bed scanner, right? If you were to clean the bar, you'd have to open the case and clean the part of the bar that faces the glass. I doubt this is worth the effort, though.

Time for a new scanner I think.
