Sounds like BS to me.
As far as I know you have to live there for 4 years and have been present for more than 50% of the time before you can apply for citizenship.
If you spend more than 6 months out of the country in any year you lose your citizenship.
The issue comes up all the time with my wife's family. She was born in Canada to British parents working there so she has dual nationality. My daughter would automatically be entitled to the same providing she fulfilled the criteria above. My wife has 6 brothers and sisters. Some born in Canada and some not. Some qualify for citizenship and some don't.
Of course the basis of these guy's application might be 'political asylum', whatever that means nowadays. Apparently we have 30,000 a year entering the UK on that premise.
