The reason for hiding the bidders ID'S was to protect only ebay. It keep ebay from getting fees when sellers who had two or more items could contact other bidders thu ebays own system and offer the item to them for their bid and thus not having to pay fees.
This was the answer I got from ebay way back when they stopped showing the bidders true ID.
