Fred, I've met with the same incomprehensibility on behalf of non-collectors. First, anyone who does not have the "collecting gene" in their DNA will never understand any kind of collecting, whether it's baseball cards, beanie babies, antique furniture, or whatever.
For those who might have some hope of understanding though, I always use the analogies of coin collecting and stamp collecting. Both have monetary value. Both have significant history and stories behind them. Same with chips, whether value checks or roulette chips.
