I prefer the plain background for two reasons.

It looks more crisper/cleaner background image.
If you are going to print lots of chips, you save on ink by not using a color background.

Here is the nice photo you took with your camera using a cookie-cutter photo imaging tool... but that is my personal preference. Others may disagree.
