Ebay Courtesy vs Free Market

I'm looking for some opinions on this scenario. A very rare chips comes up on ebay. One is able to determine that a fellow club member is bidding against you. Do you bother contacting this person to let them know they are competing against you? The other person is under no obligation to care who they are bidding against. However, they might be willing to share their level of interest in the chip, and possibly avoid a bidding war. I've had this happen both ways in the past, and I've backed off a chip to let the other person win.
Any thoughts? Is this in any way collusion?
Thanks,
Marc
