You could have transferred the money out of PayPal, and put it back in after you paid via credit card. It takes less than a minute to do that. .... .... But based on everything said, you should be safe.

I don't know how or why it works the way it does, but I have a PayPal credit card linked to my PayPal account, and even though I have a high PayPal balance, all of my purchase automatically go against the credit card.

One problem with PayPal's buyer protection (that never came up for me, thank God) is that if they mail you a box with only a worthless brick inside, and delivery confirmation, PayPal won't protect you/won't reimburse you. They only protect for non-delivery.
