It's an interesting blog, but wrong in one big regard: the City of Detroit still has horses, most notably in the Detroit Police Mounted Division.

In addition, the job of a blacksmith involves various types of iron work, and not just shoeing horses. I can see how iron work would be involved in sewer issues, such as repairs to manhole covers and creating parts when replacements are not readily available.

They were known as "Smittys" in NYPD Mounted Unit
