I understand that the cost of producing fractional chips is often greater than the face value of the chip, so casinos are reluctant to produce them. In Las Vegas, if a casino does not have fractionals do they use U.S. coins, or do they adjust table minimums and payoffs to keep transactions in full dollar amounts?
My understanding had been that chips (and tokens, and now TITOs) were important in gaming because they help concentrate the use of cash to the cashier's cages and to the receipt (but not disbursement) of cash at tables, allowing income and expenditures to be more accurately tracked (as well as limiting disputes over payments and increasing security at the games). Using coins would affect that ability.
