It would require quite a bit of modification to the car, but I've seen big block V-8 engines put into cars smaller than an Outback. The drivers seat is moved back so far that it is just in front of the rear wheels or is placed between the rear wheels over the rearend differential. Racers like building strange and unique cars! The short wheel based high power mutants tend to dance around more than go straight, but that's what makes them fun to watch!
