Sunday, was playing WPT Amateur League Points championship for a trip to Vegas to play in a WPT Points Tournament for a seat at the world championship, and I had AQ as big blind. With blinds at $120,000, I raised and saw a A Q flop. When betting resumed, I went all in with two pair and was quickly called, ending in a head-to-head contest between myself and the caller. Nothing on the turn, but the river dealt me a miserable defeat. The caller had pocket 6s -- and should not have been in the hand. And, as fate would have it, he spiked a 6 on the river to knock me out of the tournament. I made the move because I didn't have enough to make the next blinds with what I thought was the best two pair. That taught me a valuable lesson about two high pair -- and A Q. Lucky for me, I was at the final table and still won a seat at the Tropicana in June 2013 to play against the points winners of another tournament that covers July 1 through Dec. 31 with those winner combining with the top WPT in the first points championship to play against each other. Online poker is tougher than live action, and it's incredible the number of beats that occur on the river. Well, at least I am still a qualifier and hope to win some great prizes as the quest continues.
Thanks for reading. I think it's good therapy to talk about such horrible experiences. I just wish the outcome would have been better than a fifth place finish out of almost 300 qualifiers.
