Re: If worried about the lastest Computer virus ..

Today will be too late, of course.

But the FBI investigated the crimes and made arrangements with private and governmental organizations across the civilized world to establish test centers where your internet traffic could be analyzed. The site http://www.dns-ok.us/ is one of those private organization sites, run with FBI approval or assistance. There are additional sites in places like Canada, France, and the Netherlands that serve the same purpose.

The FBI is helping coordinate the effort but is not doing the testing itself.

In essence, hackers took over internet traffic by infecting users' computers. They routed infected internet traffic through their own computers, where they could "read" what we were sending (passwords, etc.) and use it to steal. If you told your computer browser to go to Website C, the virus told your computer to go to Website C after stopping first at Website B.

When the FBI and other law enforcement agencies busted the ring, they were stuck with all these computers at Website B that were still intercepting data. They decided to establish clean computers that would continue to serve as an intermediary between infected computers and the intended websites those people wanted to visit. But the FBI could not run those computers forever, so they warned people that their computers were routing data through Website B, and set a date for people to correct the problem on their own end. After that date (which was extended once), the computers at Website B would be shut off. Anyone who had not removed the virus from their computer would be sending all their internet traffic to Website B, where it would stop dead in its tracks.

And that leads to the problem that today brings. Did everyone resolve it on their own or with the help of their own internet providers or antivirus software, or did they procrastinate and create a bigger problem? Will it fizzle out like the Y2K bug? We'll find out today!
