I am going to vent to a large audience:
I just read an article about a DUI accident that killed a wife, and 3 young children and critically injured another, ages 2,3,5,& 11. He was running from police because of his past multiple offences and crashed into a parked bulldoze in a construction zone. As usual the DUI driver lived. This is a subject that enrages me. I just joined MADD and made a continuous donation to help fight this epidemic. I appeal others to do the same. Let me make one thing very clear, I am not against drinking . I am against driving after drinking. Driving drunk or even slightly impaired, to me is the equivalent to shooting into a crowd. If you look into the deaths caused by DUI drivers there is an alarming rate of repeat offenders who continue to drive impaired until they finally kill someone. The law is way too lax on these people.
What is the solution? Let’s take a look at Germany. It is the HIGHEST per capita alcohol nation in the world! Yet, at the same time it is the LOWEST per capita DUI rate in the world. How can this be? First, it is deemed unacceptable by the people. Next their laws take away the offenders license for LIFE, if caught a second time it is automatic long jail time, period. What are their legal limits? HALF of what the limits are in the United States. Designated driver? It ORIGINATED in Germany. They drink a lot, have a good time and remain SAFE on the roads. Our laws allow DUI offenders great latitude, multiple violations, probation, and double the legal limit, and it is an offense that is accepted casually by our people. That is until a death occurs. It is time to stop allowing people to kill others. The defense, “I was drunk and didn’t realize what I was doing,” is not a defense, it is an admission. Drink all you want, but do it responsibly, plan ahead. Just one beer can change your reactions from life to death. Do you want to roll the dice? Don’t do it with my family! OK I am finished.
Pass this on if so inspired. Otherwise just pass on the the next Chip related post.
