When I started collecting, like many, I acquired lots of chips - from everywhere.
I wanted one of EVERYTHING and spent a lot of time trolling Ebay.
One day I was surfing and I saw an interesting little chip.
But back then, monitors weren't as good. Scans weren't as clear. And sometimes it was hard to see detail on Ebay.
I was also talking on the phone or exchanging emails that day with one of my Mentors. (can't recall which!)
He is a long time chipper and collector that I adore and he was VERY patient with me.
Bless his heart! I had SO many questions!
Anyway - the exchange went something like this:
Me: I just saw a very old chip. What's with the Chicks in Swimsuits????
Him: WHAT are you talking about?
Me: I saw a Harrah's chip on Ebay... and I swear... I think it has chicks in swimsuits!
Him: (probably rolling his eyes) Send me the link.
Him: Jill - those aren't chicks in swimsuits! Those are harem girls...
Me: Well! THAT was pretty risque for a chip back in the 50's, don't you think??
And my obsession was born!
Actually - it gave me a diverse way to specialize.
By focusing on a casino like Harrah's, I can collect Indian Casinos, Riverboats, Atlantic City, CO, NV, roulettes, NCV's, samples, tokens, slot cards.... and even a few foreign chips without scrambling to acquire a bunch of 'everything'.
But the main reason is... my heart skips a beat when I see a beautiful old clay sunburst chip.
Or when I see a harem chip I do not have.
Or a elusive hot-stamp.
Harrah's has an example of almost everything I could want when it comes to a variety of chips!
Coin Inlays. Chipcos. LE's. Fractionals. Brass cores.
So... I can collect Harrah's and have examples of most kinds of chips in one more specialized 'collection'.
And besides - although the Playboy chips don't do a thing for me...
I REALLY dig the "chicks in swimsuits" that piqued my interest a decade ago.
These chips alone began an obsession that will last a lifetime!
