I watched a show today about treasure hunting off an island near Madagascar. They found several pirate ships and showed a square silver chip (about the size of a casino chip) with a large "X" on it. Apparently gambling with money was not allowed on pirate ships to prevent disputes among the crew. So they used these silver squares as chips and settled up once they got onto shore. Boy would I like to find one of those in an antique store!
