When I travel to Europe, I bring back rolled coins - I know the reaction of airport security personnel in many countries! I keep them in my carry-on and I alert them to the contents, either by telling them or by showing pictures or drawings in places where English is not widely spoken.

Tubes that x-ray can't see through are guaranteed to get searched by hand.
