When I was a kid, our family games that required something to bet used the Missouri sales-tax tokens. The red plastic tokens were 1 mill, or 1/1000 of a dollar. Even cheaper than penny-poker grin .

There were also green 5 mill tokens for the big bettors! The sales tax was 2 percent, and mills were still used up until 1961.
