Gloves to handle chips and another question

I went to a coin collector shop today because the store advertises supplies for chip collecting and also some chips for sale. He had a Landmark $1 that I've always wanted which I had asked to see, so he handed me a pair of white (linen maybe?) gloves and asked me to put them on before I handled the chip. He put them on as well. This got me thinking....do you use gloves to handle your chips?

The Landmark chip he had was practically UNC, but the inlay was so far off center it would have bothered me too much. Which brings me to question #2....How much does an off center inlay effect the value of a chip? Any input provided would be appreciated!
