I can't recommend any adjustments for your scanner but it is good to see someone else using HP. I have an HP scanjet 3970 and it has always given me excellent colors. My only complaint is on white chips I can't get a good scan even if I darken background. This shortcoming on white chips seems to be a problem across the board on all scanners ( without photoshop touchup ). I have yet to see one that does a really good job on all colors including white.
