....I agree with several of these oservations James
3 - I do miss the sounds of coins....I played slots as a break from table games or while waiting, and it is more fun, although if you bring back coins then you need to make sure that there are floor people who can pay out jackpots or deal with the mechanical faults when the coin hoppers get stuck which was always a pain!
5 - Although I don't play that sort of level, I remember when I first started visiting (nearly 20 years ago) and stayed at the Golden Nugget - if you played on a table for a few hours and then asked for a buffet comp the pit boss, or whoever was in charge, would check that you had been playing for that amount of time and 3 out of 4 times would write out a buffet ticket (which probably cost the casino maybe $3 or $4 when you consider everything was already in the buffet!), and even if they felt you hadn't played enough were polite when they said that we maybe needed to play a little longer that time. After a few years it became less likely to get a comp and now it seems (still as a relatively small time player!) that it just doesn't happen but what you have to do is pay and then when it comes to checkout time you find out if you are going to get something taken off the final hotel charge. Maybe I still get the same benefits, but it doesn't feel like it - the way it is handled makes a difference and it is not necessarily whether you are getting a good deal, but that it FEELS like you are getting a good deal! What I don't get anymore though is any benefit from play at the casinos where I am not staying, so I just don't bother with the card now for other locations (other than to get one for my collection!!!)
6 - As a visitor, I like the cards, because using the card is what generally gets me a free (or nearly free) stay when I book my hotel - Paris usually these days, but we are also trying out the Flamingo next time in August. The one thing I do hate is when you hand the card over to the dealer who puts the card to one side and it just sits there being ignored. I suppose I am not losing anything as such, but it bugs me that I feel like I am being ignored and eventually I will get up and move (and thus my business is lost!). If you are going to take cards, then at least take them. Maybe the dealers could just swipe them rather than waiting for someone else, and type in the value of your bet. Maybe takes 20 seconds, but keep the players happy.
7 - not sure that the online problems have caused the issue, rather that the bubble has burst. Poker was suddenly the big thing when they started televising games, but the craze has simply passed, like so many, and just left with those that will always like poker.
9 - I completely agree with this one. I used to love downtown, and walking outside between casinos which was the attraction. But now, once the show is on, it is difficult to move and the noise is too much. I have been to see the show twice, and no longer go. Afraid it makes downtown a place where you go once to see the show, and then don't go back. Shame really, but my trips are now based on the Strip.
I still LOVE Vegas....perhaps I just don't like change too much
