The Presidential Seal didn't exist...

as such and in its current form until Truman created it in 1945 via Executive Order 9646.

If you are of the sort (like I am) to count the stars, you'll realize that there are only 48 surrounding the eagle on each chip. This would have been accurate for Truman, and also for Eisenhower during his first term (which, according to T.R. King Records, is when he ordered them grin).

One of these days I'm going to have a set made up with the original Great Seal of the United States (circa 1782) and pretend that they were used by Jefferson for his high-stakes games of whist. vbg
