Brenda and I stayed at the El San Juan a few years ago. We were very impressed with the facility. The 50+ year old El San Juan decor has beautiful hand-finished hardwoods decor while the Ritz Carlton, easy walking distance right next door, is more modern with marble, chrome & glass (also very nice). We found that a few of the local merchants in Old San Juan not very friendly to non-spanish speaking tourists seeking information however. If you do go to Old San Juan, take the bus, not a taxi. The bus route takes you through the local residential areas which is interesting to see. Also, take the boat tour to the sunken wreck just off-shore. View the wreck from a glass bottom vessel and see all the marine life and fish and divers on the reef. We had a Danish captain who was very knowledgeable and friendly.
