At the same time, decades of contractual promises made to unionized workers, including no-layoff clauses, are increasing the post office’s costs. Labor represents 80 percent of the agency’s expenses... Postal workers also receive more generous health benefits than most other federal employees.
Didn't take a whole long article to see the problem. Also too many managers and administrators (which is my complaint about education)
The forms and files and CYA policies, that stop teachers from teaching. Unions that make it impossible to fire someone who is incompetent, both services. I know many educators, teachers and administrators. Most make the same complaints, but none complain about their pensions or benefits. ???
Although anyone caught stealing will get fired from USPS, they can pretty much get lost, get drunk, lose mail (watch the horror stories come in as they close stations) get a huge pension, lifetime medical benefits, and they don't participate in Social Security. Someone who worked as a carrier explain time and a half, and then double time, plus on a day off delivering on a holiday, getting double-double time?
Start with ending Saturday delivery, reduce the need for the utility carriers, have a five day work week for the regulars. What do these people get paid for driving around and delivering envelopes and small boxes. It must be terribly difficult and stressful work! Before you look, the meat goes to the carriers, more for the supervisors. A letter carrier makes an average hourly wage of $23.53
