I think the scenario is slightly different than say with US and Canadian $$ as those have different exchange rates - all notes issued in the UK are Pounds Sterling and so there is no calculations involved. Most places in England will accept Scottish notes (at least the lower denominations), the only problem I recall is a few years back when there were a number of forged Scottish £20 notes around and a lot of places stopped taking them, mainly because they saw so few it was difficult for shops in England to know if it was real or not. I don't think I have ever had any trouble using Scottish £10 notes anywhere.
