I find a scanner to be similar to a digital camera. Each photographer has their own technique to capture a shot. Each shot is subject to different opinions by different people just like in scanning. Some photographers are excellent with a point-and-shoot while others can't photograph with an expensive Nikon. It takes awhile to develop your skills.
One good thing about scanning is you can delete scans you don't like. All you've lost is time.
Try to note down different techniques you use and don't be afraid of trying. If you don't try you won't know the outcome.
I've been scanning forever but I'm still learning.
Others prefer mass scans. I scan one chip at a time. I find it easier to adjust for one chip than for many.
