When I was a kid (when the John Hancock building was being constructed) and I was living in Chicago (near Northside). They put the topping off girder on a special platform down at street level. It was painted white and passers-by were invited to sign the girder. Now they may have done this with two girders, and the idea was that once they were in-place, at the top, they would be visable, I believe at the observation level.
I signed the girder, but ended up moving to Southern California before the building was completed (opened). I've just assumed that it's been there all these years later.
That's my story on why my "John Hancock" is on the John Hancock Building!
Glad you had a nice time!
Jim
