Most chips are inexpensive, and there is no real pressure to make fakes. The more valuable a chip becomes, the more likely someone will try to make counterfeits.
The CCGTCC website has a section devoted to counterfeits and "fantasy" chips that appear to come from real casinos but didn't. Link: http://www.ccgtcc.com/xfantasy/fakes_body.html
Watch The Chip Board for news from collectors about counterfeits that have recently surfaced, as well as other rip-offs. Example: yesterday someone posted about an eBay listing for a stack of $25 chips ("$625 worth") being offered for $500 - but they were generic chips that aren't from any casino, and the whole stack was worth a couple of dollars.
A couple years ago, regular Chip Board readers knew about the discovery of a large amount of Playboy casino chips that were found buried in the ground. Bidders on eBay were paying top dollar, while people here knew that they were available in mass quantities and weren't worth what others were paying.
