Dave -- to me, it's just a matter of personal

preference when it comes down to "reclaiming" an old number -- so do it & some don't. It's not really a cash grab for the club, but just a rule that has been in place for many years. If a membership number doesn't matter to you, why would it matter if it was your old number or a new one? And as you noted, having an older number doesn't make you better than if you had a new one. I will tell you that I get several inquiries every few months from club members asking whether "so & so" is a current member. Getting a positive response does provide some level of confidence to some people. grin
