I'm in the same boat as you. To me, there is no sense in having a chip if I can't display it. That results in 1) my chip collection being limited by the available space on my poker room walls (~600 chips, which fills up faster than you'd think); and 2) displaying some higher dollar value chips in a case on a wall, so having to account for that in how I display them.
For my higher dollar value chips, I display them in air-tites, in oak display cases such as these:

They have great quality and great prices. The 18x24 case holds 88 chips in ring-type air-tites (if I have a baccarat chip, I just display it without the ring); the 22x24 holds 121 chips.
I then coat the glass in the front of the case with "Gila fade control window film", found here:
I think I custom ordered it through Lowe's and it was about $35. That was enough to do all my display cases and more (you'll want to buy the application kit as well). I'm not sure how it works on actual windows (after applying it there will be the occasional small bubble), but installed in the cases you can't notice them unless you're literally looking for it from 2 inches away.
Of course I take all of the usual precautions as well: no direct sunlight (my poker room is in the basement); blinds on the windows, and incandescent lights (which won't always be an option, although apparently they are developing more UV-friendly CFC options as incandescents are phased out).
These precautions give me enough "Belts and Braces" comfort that I don't have trepidations about displaying my chips on the walls, even the expensive ones. Of course the only 100% safe way to protect from fading and other damage is inside a climate-controlled safety deposit box, but since that removes 99.97% of the fun for me, I take a different approach (but accepting some risk in the process). I do have some "Cassidy Frames" with acrylic instead of glass that I use for less expensive chips (although I recall reading somewhere that acrylic only filters something like 85% of the UV as opposed to the 99% of the film), so I purposely only keep less expensive chips in them.
