I have become increasingly satisfied with the way my scans have progressed. I recently upgraded to an Epson V300 scanner (which was key!). Beyond that, I would strongly recommend Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. I like to scan, circle-crop the chips real tight (right on the edge), then create my own simulated shadowing through the software. Keep trying different things until you're satisfied. Never settle for less than perfection! Good luck.
