This will be my last posting for a while as I will be out the door early tomorrow for a mid-winter break from mid Minnesota to the warmer climate of southern California. There will be a few more postings after I return.
Not all chips sent to a military post office were ordered / used at the authorized clubs on base. Many a "hoch" bar could be found on many miiltary installations, espically those overseas. Heck, there was even one in the orderly room while I was in Korea, and it was the biggest room in the building. Complete with a bar teneder, a dart board, a soda vending machine (5 rows of beer, one row of soda - filled once a day Monday through Friday, twice a day on Saturdays. They could have filled in on Sundays as well - but they had that day off). Of course, penny anti games were played between paydays, and then usually, a three day black jack game from the day before payday until about the day after payday was a common occurance. No chips used at this location, just cash. I can not speak as for the other similiar places on base as you usually only stuck to the clubs, or your own "hoch" bar as opposed to going over to enemy enemy territory so to speak.
And there were also those GI's who rather than return to the states after a tour of duty, either when tere enlistment was over or they retired, decided to stay in country. Many such a person opened up an off base establishment, or worked for one of the ones already in existance, such as the Legion which could be found at the places that seemed to be at the front gate of most military installations.
This is one such entry.....
TCH - Thomas C. Harris; Pupyong, Korea.
50 - 25c; 100 - $1; 50 - $5 and 50 $10 chips were ordered. So if you colelct "illegals", you could term this as one such chip.
No duplicates to offer at this time.
Until I return.... enjoy
John
