The prototypes were made by Bud Jones in advance of the Atlantis opening, for the impending manager.
The Atlantic City Gaming Commission rejected the chips due to them not being the standard colors (white and red).
Subsequently Atlantis ordered through Paulson.
12 of each chip were manufactured. The casino manager at that time kept one $5 for himself. The remaining 23 chips found their way onto the market and obviously some will have changed hands a few times.
I am not aware that any $1s have been available for a long time.
