Once upon a time, many casinos would simply dump older issued chips into the (wet cement) foundations of their casino expansions or vthe expansions of other casinos. Years later, when those properties were imploded or otherwise torn down, the demolition crews would come across the cement encrusted (and usually damaged) chips. From there, the chips would find their way into the collector marketplace.
This has happened numerous times and has included the Dunes, Sands, and several other properties. When the Stardust was imploded they found older chips in the foundations, but Gaming was called in to oversee the re-destruction of those chips. Several years ago, Pop's Oasis chips were found in the founation of Nevada Landing. There is a 2-part write-up about that "dig" in the Club's magazine where then Club President Jim Steffner managed to get permission to affect a "dig" at that site!
So, bottom line, whenever chips or tokens are recovered from foundations, collectors have just labled these as "digs".
