As for the fighter escort, can't recall anytime (other than perhaps 9/11) that Air Force One had a fighter escort in the US. While I could be wrong, but there are certainly other less conspicuous ways to provide cover, but doing so out in the open while in the US, sure sends a scaredie cat image.
But just my opinion, not based on anything else.
