More facts. The first casino was a temporary casino, as a new casino (now Caesar's Windsor) was being built. The Art Gallery of Windsor (the local art museum) moved out of its building to accommodate the temporary casino. The art gallery moved to the region's largest shopping mall, where it became an immediate hit and caused museums across North America to re-think how they reached the masses.

The Windsor casinos were a big hit, as noted. They were so big with Americans (who made the one-mile drive under the Detroit River) that Detroit city leaders and investors made a pitch to have casinos on the Detroit side and keep that money in the USA. It took two attempts at a public vote, but eventually the voters of Detroit approved three casinos (the licenses eventually went to MGM Grand, Greektown, and Motor City Casino).

The government of Ontario also set up casinos along other border points to draw American dollars. That, too, prompted the growth of casinos on the American side of the border. Recent expansion of non-Indian casinos in Michigan have targeted some of those points along the shared border - specifically Port Huron (across from Ontario's Point Edward Casino) and in the Detroit suburbs.
