[First let me say that I wish Irene turns to the east and avoids any landfall up our east coast.]
If by chance you are in an area where the eye of the storm will be passing over you, you might want to venture outside and enjoy the calm; calm like you've never seen, before -- if you have never been in an eye. Everything is clear, sunny and dry... yet, at the same time (depending on the size of the eye and how well-formed) you'll hear the howling at the wall (sometimes everything has a pink glow). Also, depending on the size of the eye, this lasts for about as long as the speed of the storm which could be as much as 30 to 60 minutes.
I've been thru ony a few eyes, but they are most enjoyable considering what had just past over and about to pass over as the eye moves away. Otherwise, DO NOT go outside; flying objects at 80 to 90 mph is not a joke.
I'm about 17 miles inland of Palm Beach, and the storm is well out to sea at this point, and the winds are kicking up, slightly, which will reach 25 to 45 mph later on today and thru the night as it passes over.
The only thing I do not like is how slowly this sucker is moving.
May we, our livestock and wildlife be safe...!
