Last month I attended the Florida United Numismatics convention at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando and while browsing around I came across one table that had some chips which they purported to be authentic $2.50, $5, $25 and $100 chips from the Playboy in Atlantic City which looked like the real thing, the $2.50 and $5 were being sold for $10 each and the $25 and $100 for $20 each which set off a RED ALERT in my brain given the fact that in accordance with the New Jersey Casino Control Act of 1976, Atlantic City casino chips are valid and hold face value regardless of who owns the casino from where they originated and in the case of a closed casino (i.e. Atlantis, Sands) the state assumes the liability through a special fund where outstanding markers can be cashed.
So I have to wonder did I miss out on a great opportunity because this dealer was just naive to the actual value of the chips or did I dodge a bullet and avoid getting some worthless phonies that I would later regret buying. What is everyone's opinion?
