I decided to go to the monthly flea market today despite the 95 degree weather forcast. First thing I ran into was a guy selling a pile of generic denominated chips. So I buy a few. Then a guy had 15 junk rings in a pile with a $1 each sign on them. One of the rings has a huge skull on it and is marked .925. Hmmmm. This guy sells jewelry and doesn't know what .925 is?? So I buy it. It has about $8 in silver in it. I thought about Don's post a few days ago about selling sterling jewelry so I asked one guy who had a "I buy silver" sign. He was paying $18 per ounce. Not so good. Especially with silver hitting $40 again today. The next place was paying $32 per ounce. That is over 85% of the true silver value - not bad. He has tons of silver that he lets people look thru and resells it to them by the gram. So I ask the guy if he has any silver strikes. He's got 16 of them, all old ones. So how much are they? He says he has to get $16 each. Uhhhhhhh there is $24 of silver in each one. Now that is a no brainer so I fork over the money.
Needless to say I just can't wait for the worlds longest yard sale in two weeks. This year I am doing the southern route the first day since I have not been there for 5 or 6 years. The second day I will work the Crossville TN area which is where I think are the best dealers hang out. I look forward to scooping up sterling jewelry and maybe some silver coins from the yard sales on that southern route. And if any of those hillbillies have casino items they will come home with me also.
