Many people have lapsed and rejoined, getting a new number, so the 8,000+ number is not necessarily right

On these though, I would speculate:

Probably 500-1000 passed on or became to sick to continue.

Probably 2000 couldn't afford the hobby any longer.

I think the 'missing number' is probably nearer 3000, of which half were during the past 5 years.
