My limited experience...

I have stayed at El Cortez a couple of times. Nice big rooms w sitting area/table, great price. For a touch of the past, the original 'Vintage' rooms (smaller) are up the stairs from the casino floor. No noise/smoke problems reported by my co-traveler.

For the full casino experience and better downtown poker room, Golden Nugget by far.
