I have had $300 to 500 HP's and others but the best I haveever used is a Brother MFC-295CN. It is a scan, printer and does have a fax but I never use the fax! It costs about $60. It is absolutely the best, the major drawback is the ink cartridges cost as much as the printer. I had the HP's less then 6 months and I have had this one two years.
