I would agree that a nerve hole is a weak part of a chip. Without a nerve hole there is little chance of a center crack. I believe that if you have a chip without a crack there is little chance that there will ever be a crack.

I usually take steel wool to the surface. No damage will be done to the chip. It is quite hard. I haven't tried lemon juice (acid).
