on the purpose of the $5s-- I had always wondered why they had a denomination so small, and why they included the $50 in the progression; as you mention the commission on the $20 would be easy to calculate, and similarly the $100. However a $2.50 commission on a $50 bet just didn't seem like a 'round' number, which puzzled me why they would use it. However, it makes total sense that, like the $5, it would have been used to pay commissions on even larger bets.
When you state "It is believed that only a hundred or so of the $5 jetons exist.", did you mean 'ever existed' or 'were made', rather than the number (presumably far fewer than 100) which survived and exist today?
