You will need the flash drive or something that holds a SD card and does the same thing, so you might as well get one. You can also store all your scans on that, plug it into any computer and zing, you're off.
However there is one thing I wanted to add.
You can get Open Office, free, which reads all of your Office files and you don't need to fuss with a license or paying for it. I don't know what format your "scans" are in but if it's JPG then you don't need Office anything you can just use IrfanView graphic software which is also FREE.
Open Office works just fine, has all the modules and features of MS Office and many other segments that do what the whole MS Office Suite does. I removed MS Office from all my computers two years ago and I won't be buying that again. The OO version of Excel is what I use more, but the word processor is just as good.
