It may be how your preferences are set - mine are set to show the last 2 days posts on the first page, so if I reply to a post that is more than 2 days old then it appears as a new post on the screen. I think it may still be linked to the original post as well if you search it out.

No doubt someone who knows for sure will be able to confirm.
