A scanner that cannot handle certain colors will probably never handle those colors. Many Epson's do very well at capturing the various difficult colors, though my Epson Perfection does not handle a particular color of purple on a deck of cards from the Wynn (it comes out as a dark royal blue). They are great for reds, oranges, pinks and fluorescent colors. As for the setting, I believe most scan between 150 and 300 dpi. I tend to scan a 266 for a single chip, 200 dpi for a playing card. Other than positioning, I really don't do much more. I may brighten a bit when the scan is much darker than the item being scanned, but nothing else.
