What do you want to do with Open Office? Normally the scanner provider provides some driver software that will be used to talk to the scanner. If you are using image manipulation software like Photoshop it will call the scanner driver to get the scan and then allow you to manage it, edit it, etc. But the scanner software itself will normally allow you to scan and save the image (but thats usually the extent of it).
