From 1962 to 1976, my family & I made at least eight round trips between LA & Chicago on what was eventually the Southwest Chief (I think that's what it was called). My mother continued to travel by train to see family in Chicago & was on one of the last trains to make that run...she even got to my wedding in Vegas by using that train. Great memories, but a waste of money is still a waste of money...there are much better & more important things to subsidize .
